Getting Started with Pro Tools

With Anthony Falcone, for LANDR Courses — the same subject as the books, in the format that replaced them.

The same job, four formats later

Teaching somebody Pro Tools has now been, for me, a boxed DVD set, a subscription website, two books, and a streaming course on a platform that started life as an automated mastering service.

The delivery keeps changing and the actual problem does not move at all. A beginner opening a digital audio workstation for the first time is not confused by the software. They are confused about what a recording is — what a track is, why there is a difference between what they played and what got captured, and which of the four hundred visible controls they are allowed to ignore for now. Every format I have taught this in has failed in the same place, which is starting with the interface instead of with that.
